The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created an entirely new tax-favored child savings vehicle codified at IRC §530A ². The accounts, informally called "Trump Accounts", are designed for children under age 18, with a $1,000 federal seed contribution for each child born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028. IRS Notice 2025-68 (December 3, 2025) ³ issued the first guidance, and Treasury opened the account framework effective July 4, 2026.
For our family-office and wealth-planning clients, the question is whether Trump Accounts complement or replace existing 529 plans and UGMA/UTMA accounts. The short answer for most: 529 plans remain the dominant vehicle for education, but Trump Accounts open new planning ground for general-purpose child wealth-building.
